The White Horse Birstall Bake off, raises nearly £1200 for Cancer charity, Macmillan.

21st September saw an influx of creative cakes, super savouries and beautiful baking arrive at the White Horse for the seventh Great Birstall Bake off.

“We were thrilled to receive over 50 entries, including over 20 from young bakers.  There were a wide variety of offerings for the categories and the standard was superb” said Rebecca Kay who came up with the idea of the Great Birstall Bake off.  “I wanted to offer the village a community event in which all could join in and it be a bit of fun!”

The Great Bake off was just the first stage of a busy ‘cake fueled’ weekend at the White Horse as on 22nd September, the pub held its annual Macmillan Worlds biggest coffee morning.  “Each year we are amazed by all the bakers generosity, from the cost of the ingredients, their time given and the talents and love put into the donations” said Charlotte Foy of the White Horse.

The event was a great success and raised £1196.76 (including Gift aid donations), thanks to all the donated cakes for the Bake off and those who attended the Coffee Morning and gave generously.

The cakes were judged by Janet Vaughn and Cath Jones  from the Birstall WI Lisa Palmer, Angela Howlett, Louise Hull, Ben and Alice Howlett, Beth Roach, previous winners and Zoe White, Chef at the White Horse, of course following WI guidelines for appearance, texture and flavour.

The winners received a prize of a rosette with the best overall Birstall Baker, Katie Morsli receiving a sash and also a limited edition Burleighs Marilyn Monroe Gin and distillery tour for her Burger Cupcakes and filled with love cake

In addition to the Coffee morning, Margaret Walden, Birstall ‘childminder extraordinaire’, also took part in Macmillan’s ‘Brave the shave’.  Margaret shaved off all her hair, with the help of her hairdresser Kolbrun Hakonardottir, in memory of a friend recently lost to Cancer.  Margaret raised a Hair raising £1106.  She said “I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who has donated and thank you to all the Macmillan nurses who do an amazing Job”

Charlotte and Beccy would especially like to thank everyone who baked for the event and hope many more will join in the fun next year so they can crown a new Great Birstall Bake off champion in 2020 and raise even more for Macmillan.
