Duck Race News from May 1st 2017

After months of duck-fuelled organisation, the White Horse's annual Charity Duck Race was an unmitigated success.

 It was a day of unrelenting positives; after a rainy start to the day, the sun shone down and the stalls, games and activities were bustling!  The stalls this year were a great success, ably assisted by many Scouts and Guide members.  There was plenty of money raised for the two respective charities, Girlguiding and Scout groups in Birstall;

This years Duck Race benefitted from many new additions.  There was music, provided by the Scouts, which added to the Gala atmosphere and the new Duck Mascot ‘Webster’ named by Karen Stewart was also a huge hit with the children.

The Duck Race became a true ‘Sport’ by having its own commentator for the first time, Nik Loach, resident White Horse DJ.  And with more than 40 prizes for winners in the Duck Race, a large handful of people were guaranteed to win, with the winning number being 939.

But the day was not all about winning. All of the monies raised have been counted and the official figure is a fantastic £3800. This money will be split between the numerous Girlguilding and Scout Groups respectively and is all down to the wonderful generosity of the people of Birstall and the surrounding area.

The Pub itself was festooned in a whole waddle of ducks which had been decorated by the children of Highcliffe and Riverside primary schools and Acorn under 5’s playgroup. The Methodist Preschool also took part offering craft activities for the little ones.

Nick Farnham, Group scout leader, 53rd Leicester (Birstall St James ) said I would like to thank Charlotte Foy & Jenny Doyle of the "White Horse" Birstall for this unique opportunity to help secure much needed funds for our scout Hut.
Our scout Hut opened in 1931, with the money raised it can go it's way to helping children and young adults in Birstall until its 100th birthday.
Also I would like to thank the businesses of Birstall in helping to achieve this sum by donating prizes and also to the community of Birstall who turned in their masses to this annual event to show the forgotten art of "Community spirit".
A special thanks to everybody associated with Scouting in Birstall and Leicestershire who volunteer to affect the lives of so many children.

“Helen and Marie District Commissioners of Girlguiding Birstall added Girlguiding Birstall were really proud to be asked to take part in the duck race this year and wow what an amazing amount of money was raised.  We would like to thank all members, parents and public that came and supported us at the event and also the shop keepers of Birstall for their generous donations of prizes.  Without the support of members and parents these events could not take place and we are truly grateful to you all.  Webster duck was very happy with the generous hugs and donations he received when he made an appearance too!!!  All the money raised will be used to support trips and equipment at Girlguiding Birstall and if anyone wants to join us please register your interest at  Thank you once again,
