The White Horse, Birstall

The White Horse, as a building and Public House, has a rich history. After being originally created as an alehouse to serve the Grand Union Canal traffic and workers in the 1790's, the initiation of the Industrial Revolution in the 18th Century saw the White Horse's garden transformed into a coal wharf where barges brought their loads to trade with the Landlord, who was a registered Coal Merchant.

The White Horse was modernised and rebuilt in the 1920's to how you see it today, whilst the exterior of the main building still retains some of the historical markings of years gone by.

The Current Owners

Today, the White Horse is caringly run by two Birstall families, who all have their own niche in the running of the business.

Ady, who having spent the majority of his time in the White Horse from a young age, was keen to re-live his wonder years. He's married to Jenny who, alongside spending time in the White Horse with Ady, provides invaluable assistance at a number of our Events.

There's also Jim and Charlotte, who are essential in the day-to-day running of the White Horse, a place with increased sentimentality for them personally, as it was the venue for their wedding reception. Charlotte, after having worked in the White Horse in the 1990's, has returned to look after the marketing of the business. And Jim, with over 30 years experience in the trade working both front and back of house, is taking full advantage of becoming his own boss.
